Yu Suzuki, the creator of Shenmue.

Yu Suzuki (鈴木 裕 Suzuki Yū, born June 10, 1958) is a Japanese video game designer, producer, programmer, and engineer, who headed Sega's AM2 team for 18 years. He is the creator and director of the Shenmue series. He is also the founder of YS Net, an independent development studio founded in 2008.

Often referred to as Sega's answer to Shigeru Miyamoto, he has been responsible for the creation of many of Sega's most important arcade games such as Hang-On, Out Run, After Burner II, Virtua Fighter, Daytona USA and Virtua Cop. In 2003, Suzuki became the sixth person to be inducted into the Academy of Interactive Arts and Sciences' Hall of Fame. IGN listed him at #9 in their Top 100 Game Creators of All Time list. In 2011, he received the Pioneer Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards.

  • Suzuki enjoys making video games, but doesn't really enjoy playing them. He likes cars, motorcycles, clocks, wine, paintings, and billiards.
  • Suzuki's favorite game is Whack-A-Mole. He even made the game playable at the arcades in Shenmue III.
  • Suzuki's favorite character in the Shenmue series is Shenhua Ling and he says she always has been.
  • Suzuki's favorite character in the first Shenmue game is Chai. He used to assure the Shenmue team that Chai would gain popularity among females as well. He liked him so much that he even named the AM Plus conference room "Chai". [1]
  • Suzuki is the one who created Quick Time Events (QTE) and Shenmue was the first game to have them. Although QTEs have a negative reception by the majority of the gaming community.
  • The Sega Dreamcast is Suzuki's favorite Sega console.
  • Suzuki has 3 yorkshire terriers and a turtle.
