Terry Ryan (テリー・ライアン Terī Raian), also known as Terry of Yokosuka is the leader of the Mad Angels, a street gang based in the New Yokosuka Harbor District. He is a central antagonist in the first Shenmue. Cold, cruel and ultimately ruthless, Terry's sole ambition is to expand the criminal enterprises of the Mad Angels and bring them to the forefront of the Japanese underworld. He uses his expansive criminal network to track down the location of Iwao Hazuki and is instrumental in assisting Lan Di (and by greater association Chi You Men) retrieve the Dragon Mirror. By working with the Chi You Men, Terry hopes to gain control of Yokosuka and expand the influence of the Mad Angels overseas while also eliminating any opposition to the gang.
Appearance[]
Terry is American and is 185 cm (6' 1") tall. He is white skinned, has light brown hair that's tied into a ponytail, a beard, and light green eyes. In Shenmue the Animation, his skin is darker and his eyes are a darker shade of green. He also wears a silver chained skull necklace, a red long sleeved buttoned shirt that has very dark red spots on the collar area and along the buttons, and very dark red flames on the bottom of the shirt and on the wrist area of his shirt. He wears chain bracelets on both of his wrists, and silver rings on one finger of each of his hands. He wears dark yellowish-green and bright red strings around his waist, long dark green pants, and light green sandals.
Personality[]
While commanding all aspects of the Mad Angels illicit activities, Terry only associates with high ranking members of the gang (lower ranking members simply refer to him as 'The Boss of the Mad Angels').

Terry acts very tough and intimidating, although he actually is a complete coward. If he realizes his opponent is too strong, and that he doesn't have the upperhand, he will have his men do the dirty work for him. He isn't above fighting dirty and uses weaponry such as steel pipes or metal baseball bats in combat. He is very weak in hand-to-hand combat, and if unarmed against a strong opponent, he will use unfair techniques like throwing dirt into their eyes, and then attacking them while they are unguarded.
Shenmue[]

Terry's main adversary is Master Chen and his son Guizhang Chen whose antiques business prevents him from gaining a monopoly on the Yokosuka - Hong Kong shipping route.
In an attempt to permanently remove this opposition, Terry orchestrates Nozomi Harasaki's kidnapping and uses her to blackmail Ryo Hazuki into fighting Guizhang (with an additional incentive that he will lead Ryo to Lan Di if he injures Guizhang sufficiently). Terry ultimately reneges on the agreement and uses the full force of The Mad Angels in an attempt to kill both Ryo and Guizhang. This proves unsuccessful and with their combined efforts Ryo and Guizhang are able to crush the gang and bring down Terry.
Shenmue the Animation[]

Terry appears as an antagonist in Shenmue the Animation. He first appears in Episode 3, where at the MJQ Jazz Bar, he is informed by two of his goons how Charlie Grant was taken out by Ryo. In Episode 4, Terry and his men capture Nozomi and hold her hostage, and agree to give her back to Ryo if he kills Guizhang. Before confronting Guizhang, Ryo is able to make a sign for Goro Mihashi to get his help, and the episode ends with both Ryo and Guizhang on the ground tired after their fight.
In Episode 5, Terry attempts to kill Guizhang and Ryo while they're on the ground, but fails. He then has his whole entire gang take them on, while he cowardly flees. While they fight the gang, Goro, along with the help of Mai Sawano and Mark Kimberly rescue Nozomi. After the gang is defeated, Guizhang takes on Terry by himself. Terry tries to hit him with his metal baseball bat, but despite him having the upperhand, Guizhang is still effortlessly able to defeat him. A defeated Terry then tells Ryo that danger awaits him in Hong Kong, most likely referring to the Yellow Heads, and that he most likely won't make it out alive.

- As seen in the Japanese What's Shenmue? VHS tape, Terry was originally going to be the one Ryo chased through Dobuita and his face originally looked significantly different. In the What's Shenmue? demo, the role was given to Mr. Yukawa, and in the actual Shenmue game, the role was given to Jimmy Yan.
- Terry's zodiac sign is Pisces and he has a AB blood type.
