"Ryo-san, where are you going? You're not going after them? Please don't. Look what they did to Hazuki-sensei!"
―Fuku-san to Ryo declaring revenge. — Listen (file info)[src]

Masayuki Fukuhara (Kanji: 福原 正幸, Rōmaji: Fukuhara Masayuki) or Fuku-san as he is more commonly referred to by Ryo Hazuki, is a live-in student at the Hazuki Residence where he learned Martial Arts from Iwao Hazuki. Iwao took care of Fuku-san since he was 15 years old.

Shenmue[]

On the day of the incident, Fuku-san was in the Dojo with Iwao when Lan Di arrived. Early on in the confrontation, Fuku-san is thrown out of the Dojo just as Ryo arrives, after this he passes out.

As the days and weeks go by and Fuku-san comes to know what Ryo is trying to do, although Fuku-san thinks it's dangerous, he agrees to aid Ryo in whatever way he can, even giving him his life savings so that Ryo can buy a boat ticket to Hong Kong. Fuku-san does slip up though, by telling Ine-san that Ryo is going to Hong Kong because Iwao's killers are there, despite this he does mean well and does want to help.

Should Ryo lose the fight against Chai in You Arcade, Fuku-san will come to his aid, taking him home to rest. Fuku-san will also take Ryo home to rest if he loses the QTE battles with the Sukeban girls at the harbor and the drunken sailor Dick Phillips in the red-light district of Dobuita.

As Ryo is finally able to leave Japan for Hong Kong, he asks Fuku-san to take care of the Dojo for him which he, of course, agrees to.

Shenmue II[]

When in Guilin, Ryo has the option to tell Shenhua Ling about Fuku-san. He will tell her how they were like brothers, despite not being blood related.

Shenmue III[]

In Shenmue III in the second part of the game at Hotel Niaowu, Ryo can use the telephone to call Fuku-san in Japan and he and Ryo will catch up.

Extra / Alternate Scenes[]

Shenmue - Rare scenes with Fuku-san in the basement-1

If Ryo performs certain actions, it will trigger extra and/or alternate scenes with Fuku-san.

  • After Ryo gets the Letter To Father translated and goes home before heading to the harbor, he will show Fuku-san the translation, making him realize that the letter is connected to Iwao Hazuki's death.
  • There are several extra scenes with Fuku-san that can be triggered when entering the Hazuki Residence Basement to look for the Phoenix Mirror.
    • The first is if Ryo tries to enter the basement several times or waits about a half a minute without the flashlight in his inventory. Fuku-san from up the ladder will tell him there's a flashlight in the house by the door.
    • The second is if Ryo walks/runs around the basement for two in game hours without finding anything. Fuku-san will come and help him. He will notice the scratches on the floor from the shelves.
    • The third is if Ryo walks/runs around the basement for another two in-game hours without finding anything. Fuku-san will come and notice that on an area of the wall the color is slightly different. He will get spooked and Ryo tells him that he doesn't have to stay. It is crucial to actually walk/run around and not find anything to trigger these scenes. Doing nothing and finding clues will not trigger the scenes. However, Ryo can still insert a light bulb in the room to make it more convenient so the batteries on your flashlight won't die.
  • After Ryo purchases the Hong Kong ticket at Asia Travel Company and goes home before being scammed by Jimmy Yan, an extra cutscene with Fuku-san will trigger. Ryo will thank him for giving him his live savings to buy the ticket and will ask him to take care of the Dojo for him when he's gone.
  • If Ryo goes home after learning that the Mad Angels harass new harbor workers from Jimmy (At the beginning of Disc 3 for the original Dreamcast versions), an extra scene with Fuku-san will trigger where he apologizes for not being able to help more after Ryo gets scammed by Asia Travel and isn't able to go to Hong Kong.
  • If Ryo fails to find the Photo of Father in the Hazuki Residence Basement, Fuku-san will bring it to him after the 70-man Battle.

Shenmue the Animation[]

Fuku-san anime

Fuku-san as he appears in the anime.

Fuku-san appears in Episode 1 through Episode 5 of Shenmue the Animation. His role is very identical to how it is in the game series.

Personality[]

Fuku-san is slightly older than Ryo although despite this he doesn't seem to be as skilled in martial arts, and is a little clumsy at times. He also gets spooked easily, unlike Ryo who is very brave and has faced a great amount of danger. However, he is extremely loyal to Ryo and the Hazuki Family, going as far to give Ryo all of his live savings just so he can get to Hong Kong and to make up for accidentally failing to persuade Ine-san to give Ryo the money to go. Without hesitation, he also takes over the Dojo for Ryo when he leaves.

He also has a crush on Akemi Sato, the hostess at Bar Yokosuka. He frequently drinks there just to be near her. Before the incident, he came in quite often, but his grief and depression have prevented him from coming by recently.

Etymology[]

  • The name Masayuki means "right, proper" (正) (masa) and "happiness, good luck" (幸) (yuki).
  • Masayuki's surname Fukuhara means "happiness, fortune/good fortune, blessing, luck, wealth, weal" (福) (fuku) and "field, plain" (原) (hara).

Trivia[]

Fuku-san street clothes model

Fuku-san's unused casual clothing model.

  • Fukuhara's zodiac sign is Leo and he has a O blood type.
  • When asked about Fukuhara's IQ in a Twitter event called "#YouAskYu", Yu Suzuki jokingly answered it should be approximately 86.[1]
  • Originally, Fuku-san, in casual clothing was supposed to be the one that was kidnapped by the Mad Angels. The scene was actually created as well. However, Yu Suzuki saw it and said "No one would want to save this guy!" and everyone agreed. It ended up being changed to Nozomi Harasaki being kidnapped instead. [2]
    • Fuku-san's casual clothing model can be found in the What's Shenmue? Demo's files. He has bruises on his face, indicating that he was originally supposed to get beat up by the Mad Angels.
  • Fuku-san's English voice actor in the first Shenmue was Eric Kelso, who also was the English voice actor for Guizhang Chen and Wuying Ren in the first two games. Kelso did not reprise his roles in Shenmue III. He said he wanted to reprise his roles, but was never asked to do them.
    • Fans have made a mod for the PC version of the game to replace Fuku-san, Guizhang, and Ren's voices with Kelso's voice. They were able to get Kelso to re-record the lines, as well as Paul Lucas to reprise his role as Lan Di since he did not return as well. [3]
